This baked gnocchi with Venison Chorizo combines soft gnocchi, rich tomato sauce, mozzarella and parmesan in one easy family dinner.
This is proper comfort food with a little more character than the usual weeknight dinner. It is rich, easy to assemble and requires very little ceremony — which is useful when everyone is hungry and patience has already left the building.
Our Venison Chorizo adds a savoury, lightly spiced flavour that works beautifully with tomato, cheese and soft baked gnocchi.
Why This Recipe Works
Gnocchi carries sauce brilliantly, mozzarella gives the dish its soft, melted centre, and parmesan adds a sharper savoury finish.
The Venison Chorizo brings extra depth without overpowering the rest of the dish. As it heats through, some of its flavour moves into the tomato sauce and turns a simple tray of gnocchi into something considerably more serious.
It is also a very forgiving recipe. Assemble everything in one baking dish, cover it, let the oven do the work, then finish it uncovered until the cheese looks properly convincing.
Recipe Details
Serves: Approximately 4
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: Approximately 20–30 minutes
Oven temperature: 180–200°C
Category: Easy Dinners
Cooking time will depend on your oven, the depth of the baking dish and whether the sauce and gnocchi have already been heated in a pan.
Ingredients
- 500 g gnocchi
- 400 g tomato pasta sauce
- Venison Chorizo, thinly sliced, to taste
- 200 g mozzarella, grated or torn
- Parmesan, grated, for the top
- Cracked black pepper, optional
- Fresh herbs, optional
- 1 onion, chopped
Everything you need, plus Venison Chorizo doing most of the heavy lifting.
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180–200°C.
- Place the gnocchi and tomato sauce in a large frying pan or saucepan.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
- Warm them gently, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is hot and the gnocchi has begun to soften.
- Add the sliced Venison Chorizo and most of the mozzarella. Mix until everything is evenly distributed.
- Transfer the mixture to a deep baking dish.
- Scatter the remaining mozzarella over the top and finish with a little grated parmesan.
- Bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling through the centre and the cheese has melted.
- For a darker golden top, switch the oven to the grill setting for the final few minutes. Watch it closely—parmesan can move from magnificent to evidence surprisingly quickly.
- Let the dish rest for around 5 minutes before serving.
Cooking Notes
If the ingredients go into the baking dish cold, allow additional cooking time. Depending on the oven and the depth of the dish, the total cooking time may be closer to 25–30 minutes.
The dish is ready when:
- the sauce is bubbling in the centre, not only around the edges;
- the gnocchi is hot and tender;
- the mozzarella is completely melted;
- the parmesan has begun to colour.
Why Venison Chorizo Works
Venison Chorizo adds savoury depth and gentle spice without overwhelming the tomato sauce or cheese.
As it warms, its flavour moves into the sauce, turning a straightforward tray of baked gnocchi into something considerably less ordinary.
Serving Ideas
Serve hot with a simple green salad, garlic bread or crusty bread for collecting the sauce.
Finish with extra parmesan, cracked black pepper and fresh herbs if available.
